Krispy Kreme: Is it Halal?

Recently, there was a comment left by a new friend regarding my Krispy Kreme entry. Foremost, thanks Pink Shiba for visiting my blog. She was asking about the Halal status of Krispy Kreme, and I quote her comment:

Your question attracted my attention, and I did further research about it. From Krispy Kreme's website, they have information about the Halal status of their donut. They do have Halal certificate for all their donuts. And Halal certification is control by a trusted body in Australia (use google to search more information about this). This link will direct you to the exact information about Halal status of Krispy Kreme in Australia.

Below, I insert the email that my friend received from the Krispy Kreme when he asked them about the ingredients that they used in the donut.

Thank you for your enquiry!Krispy Kreme doughnuts do not contain alcohol products manufactured tobe consumed as a beverage such as liquors, wine and beer. The glaze on Krispy Kreme Original Gazed Doughnuts contain a speciallyproduced flavouring that is made and approved for use according to strict FDA guidelines. This flavouring contains a small amount of ethyl alcohol, a common ingredient that is also naturally present in just about all fresh fruits and vegetables. The flavouring for Krispy Kreme's glaze contains less than 2 percent ethyl alcohol, an essential ingredient for much flavouring commonly used in commercial food production.It is important to note, however, that when the flavour is mixed intothe glazed recipe, it becomes less than 1 percent composition and therefore, the ethyl alcohol content drops to less than 0.02 percent. During the cooking of the glazed, virtually all - if not all- of the ethyl alcohol is lost through evaporation.

The only animal by products used in our doughnuts are eggs (whites and yolks) and dairy products (including milk, butter, yoghurt, whey, nonfat milk and non fat whey). All other ingredients are made from non animal by products.

With regards to our Ice Kreme, we don't knowingly use animal derived emulsifiers and gelatin. We would advise that you consult our nutrition section on our web site at http://www.krispykreme.com.au/ for further information regarding the ingredients used in our Ice Kreme. We do not make our Ice Kreme on site, it is supplied to us by an external source. The same can be said of all our products as we do list all ingredients used in both our doughnuts and Ice Kreme in the nutritional section of our web site.

In addition to this, there is a full listing of all our doughnut ingredients on the bottom of our dozens boxes which any of our team members would be more than happy to show you if you just pop into your local store. At this stage we don't have Kosher certification on either our Ice Kremeor doughnuts and this is something we are currently working on. We do however have Halal certification on our doughnuts.

As for Krispy Kreme in Malaysia, maybe you can check at Halal Malaysia's website. Ask them about the Halal status of the donut. My experience is, never takes thing for granted. Bila dah duduk sini, I found that we should constantly check and ask about the ingredients used in the product. Some ingredients, for example emulsifier is derived from animal. Boleh google kalau nak tau maklumat lanjut.
