Yummy and easy Banana cake

Banana cake is one of my favourite cake since I was small (susah kalau citer dengan orang yang suka makan nie, almost everything I like and my favourite :D). I can eat one small loaf of banana cake (yup, a loaf, about the size of 2 Gardenia's vanilla bread sit side by side) in one sitting, and I can eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But that was a long time ago. La nie, am watching what I am eating.

Though it was my fav cake, I have never try to bake it. Mak did baked banana cake, once or twice, but have never share the recipe with me (well, I didnt' really want to know how to bake it before). A couple of months ago, a friend of my, Kak Su, shared banana cake with us (the research student) at the office. It was so delicious. So I made a point to ask her for the recipe. And she gave me this website for the recipe. The recipe is so simple, it took me just 15 minutes to prepare.

Ingredients:

4 ripe bananas (I used 5, have actually mashed 4 bananas and I thought it was not enough)
3 eggs
1 3/4 cups of self-rising flour
1/4 cup of corn flour
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of oil (I used canola oil)
1 tsp of sodium bicarbonate (I omit this one, didn't have any in the kitchen)
a pinch of salt

Method:

1. Beat the egg and sugar until soft and light
2. Mix in the mashed bananas
3. Then mix in flour, stir and later mix in the oil
4. Put the mixture in a baking tray
5. Bake the cake for 45 - 60 minutes, or until a skewer inserted and came out clean

Try it...

p.s. To date, I have baked this cake twice, because atang love it so much :D

Lunch @ Makanan Indonesia

This week we did our normal groceries shopping at Coles. It has been a routine for us to go somewhere every Saturday, be it doing the groceries, window shopping or visiting friends. When the kids were around last year, we will take them to the park in the evening. Anywhere, for relaxing. It is a therapy that I find works for me all the time. Keeps me away from the work, seeing other things, appreciating things around me, for we don't know when the time will come. Experience is life, and life is experience.

So talking about experience, after the groceries shopping, we had lunch at an Indonesian restaurant, located at Hardgrave Rd, West End. This is our 2nd experience, tasting and eating at the restaurant. Makanan Indonesia is the name of the restaurant. They have a wide spread of Indo cooking, and it is so difficult to decide on what, luckily I have a friend who I met at the university, recommended a few dishes (and coincidently she was there at the restaurant when we arrived). So we ordered Dendeng kentang belado, Gado-gado and Cumi goreng. Do you know what cumi is? Cumi is an Indonesian word for squid.

[Inside the restaurant]

The Gado-gado, marvelous, wish they put more peanut sauce, and would be twice marvelous.

I forgot to snap pictures of Dendeng kentang berlado and cumi goreng. The plates are all empty when I finally realised my mistake :D. Everybody who works in the restaurant is friendly. They make sure their customer are satisfied with the food. Through my friend I was introduced to Tante Mimi who cooked our perfect Dendeng kentang berlado and Tante Yenni who made sure everything is hot before serving us :D.

This is our 2nd time visit, and will definately come again to try other dish. Atang has already decided what he is going to have for the next visit.

Phewww lega rasanya... but my eyes is giving up on me...

I am satisfied with last week week outcome. I finally managed to complete the 1st draft of the paper, and sent it to my sifoo for his review and comment. I now have 1 week until due date.

My team mate and I have been working with this paper for 2 weeks. Hours of discussion, preparing the structure, analyse data, observation, writing, rewrite, sending the document to and fro between us, and plus other research things. I tell you it was so exhausting, but worth it. Hope the payoff is great too.

Came friday, I felt sooo drained out, and I decided to work from home. I can even feel my eyes tiring, my fault actually. My left-eye's contact lense has tore, so for the whole week last week, I've been wearing glasses to work. You see, I have prescription for my lenses because of astigmatism problem, so I have to wear toric lense for my left-eye, and normal lense for my right-eye. My glasses are normal lenses, because most of the time I am wearing contact lenses. So I told my optometrist to just use normal lenses for my glasses, and prescribe toric contact lense for my left eye.

Ahahha what's the big deal ya... Well actually, I have 4 more pairs left, but am saving it for the raining days. Buying contact lense in Brisbane is never an option for me, because it is too damn expensive, sorry for that, but I want to emphasis how expensive it is. So I will only get supply from home. I was unable to get supply the last time I went home because for toric lenses, you have to wait for 2 weeks to get the lense. Aiyah and I was there in Malaysia for only 2 weeks. At that time, I was calculating whether I managed to go back (again, for research purpose) before I am out of stock. Seems feasible, but I didn't accounted for any accident to happen.

Anyway, I have ordered a new stock, just waiting whether there is anybody who is flying out to Brisbane soon. Or else, have to deal with these tired eyes with other solution. Anyone?? Owhh... my friend told me about this product, Toner Mata, and she wants to try it. Has anyone try this product and care to share a bit. If it is good, I may want to buy it someday.

Or maybe it is not my tiring eyes, maybe it is the sign of aging. Ohhh and I experiencing short-term memory lost lately.

Helping newcomer and kuih Cara berlauk

Last week, we were incharged of looking after a family who just arrived from Malaysia. I actually knew them, for the husband was my coursemate when I was doing bachelor degree at one of the local universities in Malaysia. I knew they were coming to Brisbane from a good friend of my in Malaysia. Both of them are futhering their study. And for the past few months (before they came here), they have been contacting me for information.

Last weekends, we were busy showing them around. And I made this for the family, and also for some friends. Kuih cara berlauk, using the mini muffin tray.

Resepi...hmmmm... orang noghori cakap, "sonang baitu" . Just make the filling like curry puff filling, and for the batter, mix flour, coconut milk, salt and eggs... kira agak-agak aje... macam buat kuih cucur, and then spooned the batter into the muffin tray, add the filling and bake for more or less 15 minutes. Kot dah teringin sangat nak makan kuih cara kat sini kan, boleh la cuba

(kalau nak buat yang manis tu, ala yang warna ijau tu, lotak gulo yo, gantikan filling ayam tu :D)

my Eyes play Trick on me

aha.... I did say that am restricting myself for grabbing a new book right. But I can't help it. Books are cheaper here (in AUD), so I can easily be tempted. I was at a book store, looking for some children books that I can give to a friend's daughter for her birthday. I spent about half and hour in the book store, and 3/4 of the time I spent not for the present, but reading back cover of some books, for me...hehehe... And I decided to buy this one (and the present of course) with that little bookmark.

But I haven't started reading it, at least yet, at least for a couple of months, maybe until I am so depressed with the work, or maybe sooner. I don't know... hmmmm

Bon Voyage to Feeza and family

Another family went home for good. Time passing without notice. Almost everybody I know, when I first came here to Brisbane is going back. And I realised that soon my time will come, but feeling anxious on what will happened then.

We sent feeza at the airport on the 5th February. Feeza came here to do her masters degree. She and her family came a few months after we came here, and we were appointed by the committee to help her settle down in Brisbane. We have a Malaysian Student society, almost all Malaysian student (Malays) is a member of the society. This society will organise social gathering, and also help new comers to settle down for the first week. What we usually do, for example, find temporary accommodation, prepare meals (depending on the situation), show newcomer around the city, get important things done, like opening up bank account, mobile phone registration and buying groceries and stuff. And also showing the new students around the campus.

All member will take turn in doing this, more like, hmm how to put this in words, Ok... hmmm... like this. Say when we first arrived, the committee has selected several families to help us settling down. Later, after we have settled down, we were then assigned to help newcomer with the same thing. And when feeza arrived in 2007, we were one of the families who look after them for the first few days, until they found a permanent resident. When they first came to Brisbane, feeza has just finished her confinement (berpantang) and adam, her son, was just over 2 months.

And adam was almost 2 years when they left Brisbane for good.

Bon Voyage, nice knowing you guys. I know feeza reads my blog occasionally, so, all the best feeza. Hope to see feeza and family in Malaysia in the near future.

am Flat-out, nothing is new

Been super busy, am writing a paper for a conference, which the due date is around the corner. Have some entries that yet to be published, but have no enough time to review them. This including a homework that was given by Ms IsZan last week (jangan marah babe). Wait aaaa...

What I can say about this week is, it has been an enjoyable week, lot of happy and satisfying things happened, but many other things to complete before end of this week. Stressful indeed, but in a positive way that keeps me moving and evolving. Met new people. Was demotivated at the beginning of the week, felt like in a black-hole, with unsettling issues circling around you.

But yesterday received ensuring remark, seeing things in other perspective, and realised, there is always a way, as long as you have the will to find/do it.

Keywords: confidence, never give up, intelligence and tawakal to Allah

Renungan: Membaca horoskop walaupun suka-suka maka solatnya tidak diterima selama 40 hari

From the Malaysian Student's mailing list again.
--------------------------------------------

Mungkinkah kita terpedaya...

Thank you all, for your comment about yesterday's entry. We have a Malaysian Student's mailing list here in Brisbane as a means of communication, and recently a member has forwarded that yahudi article thru the mailing list. Soon, a student replied the email with some interesting remarks. Kudos to him for sharing the information.
-------------------------------------------------

3. I also found someone named Reuben Stephen Carr. He's a rabbi (Jewish priest). Yes, he wrote many books on how to raise a child for jewish people. It's good to learn how different nations raise their children - Jewish, Arabs, German, Jepun, Singapore, Australia, American, etc. Setiap bangsa ada kelebihannya. Hikmat itu seperti barang yang hilang bagi mukmin. i.e wherever you find hikmah, that's yours. However, I think it would be better to study what Islam says first. There is a nice book by Abdullah Nasih Ulwan titled "Pendidikan Anak-anak dalam Islam." It covers from before the birth till adult life. You'll be surprise how detail it is to produce a warrior. It is the parent who will be tired, not the child.

4. Ada beberapa artikel pendek. Antaranya, artikel ni dari Pejabat Mufti Brunei. http://www.brunet. bn/gov/mufti/ alhadaf/sept98/ h_medan.htm Dan satu lagi dari http://www.ismaweb. net/v2/Article22 0.html .

5. Treat this as another training for us to identify hoax information in the information highways. Use google to check, and if you are still not satisfied, go make telephone calls to the physical authority (if it is possible to do that). Do not fully trust this virtual world, full of lies and some truth (or may be the other way around?). It's a storage and a medium used by all type of people to transmit what they know and also what they don't really know, with various intent and goals. Happy Internet-ting.

Sape lagi bijak? Sape makin lalai?

Akhir-akhir nie, sering nampak artikel "Mengapa Yahudi Bijak" merata-rata, sama ada kat blog, orang forward email atau nota kat facebook. Rasa kurang selesa, kenapa kite nak ambil tahu amalan Yahudi, walhal amalan Islam, yang lagi benar, tidak pulak nak ambil tahu. Oh, mungkin kita tak tahu. Takpe, dah jadi tanggungjawab kita kan, sampai2 kan ilmu pada kengkawan, boleh tambah ilmu pengetahuan.

Jadi pada sapa2 yang belum baca artikel ni, sila la pergi kat sini ya... saya tak mau paste kat sini sebab rasa kurang selesa dengan research tu (kalau benar la ada research sebegini kan)...dah baca kang, patah sini balik, sebab ada benda saya nak komen laa....

haaa dah baca....Saya nak komen bahagian pemakanan tu laaa. Sebenarnya amalan makan buah sebelum makan tu sunnah nabi saw. Ya, mungkin ramai tak tahu kan, sebab kita dok ikut orang barat makan buah lepas makan (tapi kat sini, oz tak makan buah lepas makan, tapi makan kuih2 manis, dessert tu...hmmmm).

Ok nie saya nak cari link kat wiki, bukti ramai para saintis Islam suatu ketika dulu....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_science

Persoalan: Adakah kita yang lalai???

Kalau ada kekurangan, mohon kongsi ya. Kita sama-sama belajar kan. Mempelajari ilmu satu tuntutan Islam.

Gloria Gaynor "I will survive"

This is one of my fav song. I can't never sing this song, too fast for me, short breath. I remember Farhan (AF) sang this song, and she did it so damn well.

Book review: "Lisey's story"

Finally I managed to finish this book....phewwwww.....sooooo difficult to finish 1 book lately. Have to constraint myself from spending hours reading the book, coz I should be concentrating on my research. However, I do need a break ya. So been reading Lisey's story for a couple of months (yup....slow like a tortoise I am). Most of the pages, was done on the bus, on the way to the office. And half of the book onboard AirAsia enroute Malaysia-Brisbane.

Try to find the cover of the book that I have, but couldn't found any. Anyway, here is the review.

For a start, I would like to give an introductions of how I came to know Stephen King's books, been a collector till now, and still an avid reader of his book. All this began with my sistah, buying and giving me Salem's Lot. Vampire movie was an-in-thing during that year. And Salem's Lot did catch my attention, and I have read it more than twice. Hehehhh... and since then I have been the collector and reader of King. Either I bought the book or got it as presents. Until now I am trying my best to keep updated with King's latest book, however, I have missed a number of his books. A few weeks after I bought Lisey's Story, Duma Key was then released. Satu ari nak ajak atang gi Carrara market la, carik second hand book. You can get 1 book at $3.

Ok here is the review (am still not good at doing this). Lisey's Story is a story about a widow (named Lisey, obviously) who has just lost her husband, and couldn't let go of her memory of her late husband, until she felt she has no reason to live anymore and keeps blaming her husband for leaving her. Eventually her memories have save her life from a blackmailer. At start, the story was pretty slow, and I did skip some pages because it was kinda dragging. But after the third chapter, when she is recollecting her memories, the best part begins.

I like the book, but talking about a similar King's book, I like Rose Madder even better. More suspense and scarier. So I end this review with an interesting abbreviation I got from Lisey's (King likes to create abbreviation).

A must try : Marble Chocolate Cheese Cake (Kak Hanieliza recipe)

I believe "cooking is the best therapy". Often during weekend, feeling lonely at home, I will get emotional easily. So I decided, why not try a new recipe to pass the time. I have a long list of wanna-try recipes from the web. I normally visit Kak Liza's fotopages (but it is no longer available for public, and kak Liza has created a blog to publish her recipes), Kak Ida's fotopages and MamaFami's fotopages. I have tried some of their recipes (there is an entry on how I baked a cheesecake in this blog), simple recipes but the outcome is sooo satisfying.

Last week I baked Marble Chocolate Cheese Cake (from Kak Liza's fotopages). I just found the same recipe on MamaFami's fotopages. And believe me, it is a must try recipe.

Here are the ingredients (am so lazy, so I just copy and paste the recipe from MamaFami's) :

Ingredients A :

180 g butter
20 g cocoa powder (I used 2 heaps of tablespoon)
170 g castor sugar
3 eggs
120 g self-raising flour
1 teaspoon baking powder

Ingredients B :

250 g cream cheese
60 g castor sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 egg

Method :

1. Sift self-raising flour, baking powder and cocoa. Set aside.
2. Cream butter and sugar.
3. Add in eggs (ingredient A), one at a time.
4. Add in the sifted ingredients and mix well.
5. In another bowl, beat all ingredients in B till light.
6. Prepare a 7" tray, line with grease-proof paper (I used a medium size round springform pan). Pour in one part of ingredient A's mixture into the tin. Spread evenly. Then pour the whole ingredient B's mixture on top and spread evenly. Finally pour the balance of ingredient A's mixture on top and spread nicely to cover the whole area.
7. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 160 C for 1 hour.

Yummy :p

Wake up and smell Jasmine

Yesterday, for some reason I feel wonderful, happy, and sooo relieve. I can't explain why, can't even isolate the main reason I felt sooo happy. Too many things contributed to that, entwined. Anyway, yesterday I woke up, and after getting ready to go to the office, I went out the balcony, to take a deep breath (for it is going to be a long day) and inhaling a lovely and sweet smell of Jasmine. It was raining early in the morning, and the Jasmines were starting to bloom. Just 2 days back, I took some pictures of the buds.

There are loads of them, and the smell....soooo refreshing, in addition to the after-rain smell.

I then plucked a bunch of them, and put them into a container (the only container that I can grab), and placed them in the middle of the coffee table.

Alhamdullillah, am able to smell and to see wonderful thing created by Allah.

[a special dedication to my dearest friend Gee, for her birthday. The jasmines were blooming yesterday, to commemorate your birthday.]
